Wounaan Traditional Oral Storybook

Project type

Book Illustration

Medium

Watercolor, Procreate on iPad

In collaboration with Native Future and Indigenous group Wounaan, in the Darién Gap, this project involved the co-creation of a book dedicated to preserving Wounaan Meu, a language endangered by decades of cultural marginalization and environmental degradation. Developed in the Wounaan’s traditional oral storytelling style, the book serves as a tool for raising awareness about deforestation and the ongoing threat to Indigenous-owned lands.

Frankie was selected by Wounaan leadership through an art-based review process. Over several years, the team engaged in an iterative, collaborative process to ensure the visual representation aligned with cultural aesthetics and values, as approved by Wounaan leadership.

All proceeds, excluding platform fees from StoryJumper, are directed to the Wounaan community.
